Is IPL or laser hair removal for me? The pros and cons at a glance!

Tired of spending hours in the bathroom every week for smooth, hair-free legs and dreaming of staying permanently silky?
Then IPL and laser are great alternatives!

But, like any hair removal method, they have their pros and cons.

I’ll list them for you so you can decide if these so-called “permanent” hair removal methods are right for you.

(And of course, I’ll explain why “permanent” is in quotation marks.)

What Are IPL and Laser?

During an IPL or laser treatment, the hair root is heated until it dies. This happens through the energy released by the laser or flash lamp.

This energy is converted into heat, which destroys the hair follicle and prevents new hair from growing.

Getting flashes of light fired at your skin might not sound pleasant, but it’s far less painful than you might think.

While not completely pain-free, the sensation can be compared to a rubber band snapping against your skin.

It’s not exactly enjoyable, but whether it’s tolerable depends largely on your pain threshold.

The Difference Between IPL and Laser

Both laser (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) use selective photothermolysis to convert light energy and destroy hair follicles.
The effect is the same, but the methods differ significantly:

  • Laser emits a strong, concentrated energy beam of a single wavelength/color, making the treatment highly effective as no light is wasted.
  • IPL, on the other hand, uses multiple wavelengths/colors, like an ordinary lamp. This makes the light less powerful, reducing the effectiveness of follicle destruction.

While IPL is faster since it treats larger areas at once, it requires more sessions.
Moreover, IPL has a higher chance of hair regrowth, whereas laser treatments can permanently remove up to 80% of hairs.

Myths About IPL and Laser Hair Removal

It always works, and the results last forever! That’s what many people believe. However, this isn’t entirely true.

Myth 1: IPL and Laser Always Work

IPL and laser are highly effective, but they’re not suitable for everyone. The hair must be darker than the skin.

This means older women with white or gray hair are out of luck, as are those with very light blonde hair.

Myth 2: The Results Last Forever

It’s not entirely true that the results are permanent.

Besides fine hairs that cannot be removed by the laser, dormant or inactive follicles can be reactivated by hormones.

Particularly testosterone. This can sometimes cause new hairs to grow over time.

Fortunately, this can take years!

A Hairless Dream or a Risky Nightmare?

A few visits to the salon followed by years of silky-smooth legs? It sounds ideal! But nothing in life is perfect (as much as we’d like it to be).

Despite their advantages, IPL and laser aren’t for everyone.

Let’s dive into the pros and cons to help you decide.

Pros

  • Long-Lasting Hair Removal

While IPL and laser don’t remove hair forever, they do offer long-lasting results.

After several sessions, 70–90% of unwanted hair is permanently gone.

  • Less Maintenance

You may need to visit the salon every 6 weeks for a few months, but that’s nothing compared to slathering on hair removal cream weekly (or even daily), right?

  • Bye-Bye Strawberry Skin

Despite its sweet name, strawberry skin has nothing to do with fruit. It refers to the dark dots or spots on your legs after shaving.

These are caused by natural oils, bacteria, and dead skin clogging the follicle, which turns black when exposed to oxygen.

IPL and laser destroy the hair root, eliminating the chance of follicle clogging. (Want more tips to prevent strawberry skin? Read this article!)

  • Versatile

Legs, back, underarms, bikini line, stomach, or face—IPL and laser can be used anywhere.

Cons

  • Ouch!

The pain depends on your pain tolerance. It feels like a rubber band snapping against the skin and may leave a burning sensation. Improper use can even result in burns.

  • Time-Consuming

Since hairs don’t all grow at the same rate, multiple sessions are required.
Each treatment only destroys follicles in the first growth phase.

You’ll typically need 6–10 sessions, depending on your skin tone, hair color, and hair structure, with a 6-week rest period between treatments.

  • Cost

The treatments can be pricey, but considering you’ll never need to buy wax strips or razors again, it’s worth it in the long run. Think of it as an investment in beauty!

  • Not for Everyone

For laser and IPL, the hair must be darker than the skin. Therefore, it is not suitable for people with blonde, white, or gray hair.

In these cases, the contrast between the hair and skin is insufficient.

Additionally, a laser treatment can cause pigmentation issues, leading to white or dark spots. This is not very common, but people with darker skin tones should be extra cautious.

  • You Need to Let Hair Grow

For treatment, hair must be at least 1/4 inch long. This means no shaving for at least a week beforehand—letting the hair grow out.

IPL and Laser Are Perfect for Women Who…

  • Have a low pain threshold and can’t handle waxing or epilating
  • Don’t have sensitive skin prone to discoloration
  • Are willing to invest in hairlessness
  • Want to enjoy the results for as long as possible

If IPL and Laser Aren’t for You…

  • Have sensitive skin? Shaving might be a better option.
  • Can handle more pain but have easily discolored skin? Try epilating.
  • Want a quick fix, even if it requires regular maintenance? Hair removal cream might be your thing.

Every woman is unique, and your schedule, budget, and pain tolerance determine the best method for you.
