Why I never use multi-blade razors again

(And How I Finally Solved These 4 Shaving Problems)

All the single blad(i)es, all the single blad(i)es!

It’s no secret—I’m a huge fan of single-blade razors.

They’re easy to clean, durable (making them more affordable and eco-friendly), stylish, and give me a luxurious shaving experience.

Multi-blade razors? I haven’t touched one in years, and I couldn’t be happier about it.

But why, exactly? Let me explain in this article.

My preference and love for single-blade razors don’t just come from their many advantages.

It also stems from the stubborn problems that multi-blade razors consistently cause.

And I bet that after reading this, you’ll ditch your old, classic razors too!

The Problem with Multi-Blade Razors

Razors with two or more blades are a double-edged tool—literally.

Yes, they give a smooth shave, but they also increase your chances of ingrown hairs, itchiness, irritation, and cuts.

But why does this happen?

Problem #1: Ingrown Hairs

Multi-blade razors create that smooth result through their “lift and cut” technique.

This means the blades stretch your skin and pull the hairs slightly out of the follicle before cutting them.

By shaving closer to the skin, they give you a temporary silky finish.

Once the blade has done its job and your skin relaxes, the hairs spring back slightly below the skin’s surface.

This phenomenon is called blade hysteresis.

Because multi-blade razors cut below the skin’s surface, the hairs have to grow longer to reappear.

The good news? You can enjoy smooth legs for a bit longer.

The bad news?
Those sharply cut hairs now poke against the skin from the inside, often curling back under the skin. This causes irritation, and worse, ingrown hairs.

Problem #2: Itchiness and Irritation

With multi-blade razors, every stroke scrapes more blades across your skin than necessary.

Often, you’ll go over the same spot three to five times. Ouch.

This over-scraping dries out your skin and removes too many surface skin cells, leading to an increase in dead skin cell production—a vicious cycle.

Just as you wouldn’t exfoliate your skin harshly every day, you shouldn’t do it with a razor (or five).

Problem #3: Cuts

Razors with multiple blades mean multiple opportunities for nicks and cuts.

On top of that, we often press harder with traditional razors, thinking it will give a closer shave.

While it might remove more hair, this extra pressure increases your chances of razor burn and cuts.

Applying too much pressure also makes the blade glide unevenly over your skin. Instead, let the razor gently do the work for you.

Tip! Using a single-blade razor eliminates the need for pressure. Its weight ensures the perfect amount of contact with your skin.

Bye, Bye Multi-Blade Razors!

The risk of ingrown hairs, irritation, itchiness, and cuts is already high enough.

Why make it worse by using the wrong shaving tools?

So, what’s the solution?

Yes, you guessed it—switch to a single-blade razor! You won’t regret it.

Does a sleek, stainless-steel razor feel a bit intimidating?

First, let me reassure you: there’s nothing wrong with your skin. Your skin is simply doing what it’s designed to do, reacting to the stress of shaving, which leads to unwanted side effects like itching and red bumps.
