Makeup without junk: here’s what to look out for

We want the best for ourselves and our bodies. Therefore, it is wise to take a critical look at the products you use to care for your skin, as well as what makeup you use.

Because, even though it goes unnoticed, we ingest a lot of makeup in our lives.

For example, research shows that a woman ingests between 500 and 1,500 grams of lipstick on average in her lifetime. That’s startling, isn’t it? It shocked me considerably. It makes me realize how important it is to buy makeup without harmful substances.

What harmful substances are in makeup? A makeup product can contain several harmful substances. For example, there may be lead in your lipstick, cadmium in your eyeliner and concealer, nickel in powder and blush, beryllium in your bronzer and eye shadow and arsenic in your foundation and mascara. Now you may not immediately recognize the names of these substances, but it is important to be aware of what these substances have in common: they are harmful to the human body.

How do I know if my makeup doesn’t contain junk?

The tricky part is that the above harmful substances are not listed on the ingredient label of makeup. So you can unwittingly, even if you buy organic products, buy a product that contains harmful substances. It is also unfortunate that almost all makeup products contain these substances. However, there is a big difference in quantity. However, no safe upper limit has yet been established by which you can tell if a product is 100% safe to use.

Ok, now what?

Exactly how much lead a lipstick contains can only be determined through research. This also applies to the other pollutants mentioned. Of course, you can’t do this research yourself, but you can do additional research on lead-free lipstick. For example, online. Or you can inquire with your favorite lipstick brand yourself and ask how much lead your lipstick really contains.

Also be aware of harmful ingredients

Unlike harmful substances, harmful ingredients do appear on the ingredient label of cosmetics. The Consumers Union has created a nice list of ingredients in cosmetic products that you can consult. Important to keep in mind is that: A product that contains a harmful ingredient may still be a safe product to use. Every skin reacts differently to (harmful) ingredients in makeup and personal care products. Some skin is more sensitive than others.

Avoid these 10 ingredients in cosmetic products

Nevertheless, the Consumers Union believes there are 10 ingredients that never belong in cosmetic products. You can check the labels of your makeup for the following ingredients: Bronopol, Butylphenyl methylpropional (BMHCA), EDCs/hormone disruptors such as Butylhydroxyanisole BHA, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexene carboxaldehyde (HICC), Methylisothiazolinone (MI or MIT), Parabens, Petrolatum and Triethanolamine

Always take good care of your (sensitive) facial skin

The skin on your face is often more sensitive than the rest of our body. Especially the skin around the eyes and lips. Also, if you shave or wax your upper lip, for example, your skin is extra sensitive, so it is incredibly important to use makeup without junk and the right care products. This greatly reduces the chance of an (allergic) reaction (such as redness, itching and rashes) and prevents harmful substances from entering your body. No woman should ever feel that way, and neither should you!

First, let me reassure you: there’s nothing wrong with your skin. Your skin is simply doing what it’s designed to do, reacting to the stress of shaving, which leads to unwanted side effects like itching and red bumps.

That’s not the result we women want, so we need to give our skin and nature a little extra help. And that’s exactly what YIONN products are designed to do!
