Why I never use multi-blade razors anymore
(and how I finally got rid of these 4 shaving problems because of it)
All the single blad(i)es, all the single blad(i)es!
They are easy to clean, durable (making them cheaper and better for the environment), look cool, and give me a truly luxurious feeling.
Multi-blade razors, on the other hand? I haven’t touched those in years. And I’m very happy about that.
But why, exactly? In this article, I’ll explain it to you!
My preference and love for single blade razors doesn’t just come from the many benefits they offer.
It also has to do with the persistent problems that multi-blade razors cause time and again.
I bet that after reading this article, you’ll also leave your old, classic razors behind.
The problem with multi-blade razors
Razors with two or more blades are a double-edged shaver, uh I mean sword.
They give a smooth shave, but the chance of ingrown hairs, itching, irritation, and nicks is much higher.
Why is this?
Problem #1: Ingrown hairs
Razors with multiple blades provide a smooth result through their lift and cut technique.
This means they stretch the skin and pull the hairs slightly out of the skin before cutting them.
This allows you to shave closer to the skin.
Once the blade has done its job and the skin is no longer stretched, the hairs spring back a bit and can end up below the skin’s surface.
This phenomenon is called blade hysteresis.
Because multi-blade razors essentially cut below the skin surface, the hair has to grow further before it becomes visible again.
The good news is that those annoying stubbles take a bit longer to appear.
The bad news?
That sharply cut hair now pricks against the skin from the inside and has to grow through the skin surface.
This causes skin irritation and there’s a high chance the hair won’t grow out, but in. Hello ingrown hairs!
Problem #2: Itching and irritation
If you use a multi-blade razor, you’re scraping more blades over your skin than necessary with every stroke.
Usually, you go over the same patch of skin as many as 3 to 5 times with a blade! Ouch.
This scraping dries out the skin and removes too many superficial skin cells, which then increases the production of dead skin cells. A vicious circle.
Just as you shouldn’t renew your skin daily by means of an exfoliate session, you shouldn’t do it with a blade (or 5) either.
Problem #3: Nicks and cuts
Razors with 5 blades go over the same patch of skin 5 times. That means not only more irritation, but also 5x more chance of nicks.
Moreover, with classic blades, we often tend to push extra hard. Because the harder you push, the more hair is removed, right?
Well, yes, but by pushing so hard you increase your chance of razor burn and nicks.
When you apply too much pressure, the blade also moves unevenly over your skin. Letting it glide gently over your skin is the way to go.
Unfortunately, you’re then often left with a few rebellious, escaped hairs… aaargh.
Tip! If you use a single blade razor, you don’t have to apply any pressure at all! The device is heavy enough, so exactly the right amount of pressure is placed on the skin automatically.

The chance of ingrown hairs, irritation, itching, and nicks after shaving is already high enough as it is.
We don’t need to make it worse ourselves by using the wrong shaving gear.
