What is epilating?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Epilating is a hair removal method where you use an epilator to remove the entire hair along with the hair follicle. This means it takes much longer for the hair to grow back, so you don’t have to perform hair removal as often. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, for an epilator to be able to pluck them, the hairs must be at least half a centimeter long. This makes winter the perfect time to start. <\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n

How long does hair stay away after epilating?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As I wrote above, the fact that hair stays away longer and comes back softer (compared to shaving) is a major advantage of epilating. But there are more benefits. <\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n

1. Epilating ensures less and lighter hair growth<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When the hairs slowly reappear after epilating, they aren’t as noticeable and feel less coarse. This is because they are completely new and have a soft tip. Therefore, they don’t feel like hard stubble, but like light, soft hairs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, there is also less hair to remove during a subsequent session. This is because not all hairs have the same growth cycle. Also, some of the hair follicles will eventually become exhausted and stop producing new hair (don’t expect miracles, though).<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n

2. It is suitable for short hairs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

An epilator can grab short hairs (0.5 cm), so your hair doesn’t have to get excessively long between sessions. This is in contrast to wax strips, which do not remove very short hairs well. <\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n

3. Epilating is a convenient hair removal method<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Epilating isn’t difficult and you can do it in peace at home. An epilator is small and therefore easily fits in your suitcase when traveling. <\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n

4. It is a ‘neat’ way of hair removal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Unlike waxing, an epilation session doesn’t cause a mess or sticky business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some epilators can be used in the shower or bath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other devices are only suitable for ‘dry’ epilating.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n

5. Epilating prevents red dots and pits (strawberry skin) after hair removal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After shaving, you might see red dots and pits appearing; this is called strawberry skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These dots are caused by the skin’s own oils, bacteria, and dead skin getting trapped in the hair follicle and then turning black when exposed to oxygen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During an epilation session, the hairs are pulled out including the hair root. This means there is no longer a chance of clogging the follicles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you’ve read, there are many advantages to epilating. Unfortunately, this hair removal method, just like shaving, waxing, and IPL, also has a number of disadvantages. <\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n

1. Epilating is painful<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Let’s be honest: epilating is, especially in the beginning, incredibly painful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So you’ll have to grit your teeth for a bit!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This also makes it less suitable for sensitive areas like your bikini line<\/a> and your armpits<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is possible, but it’s certainly not painless.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n

2. It causes redness and irritation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Epilating is a somewhat aggressive hair removal method which can cause redness and irritation, especially for women with sensitive skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can reduce the chance of redness and irritation by, among other things, using a mild, exfoliating scrub beforehand and ensuring good aftercare.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n

3. Epilating can cause discoloration of the armpits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Even if you always work carefully, hair removal is always stressful for your skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your skin discolors easily, there is a chance that ‘aggressive’ hair removal methods like epilating will cause pigment spots. This is because hair removal stimulates the production of pigment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. It increases the chance of ingrown hairs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Epilating and waxing cause ingrown hairs more quickly and frequently than other hair removal methods, such as shaving and using hair removal cream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During shaving, for example, you cut the hair close to the surface of the skin and create a sharp tip. This tip easily pricks into the skin and then, with a bit of luck, grows straight up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With epilating, however, you pull the hairs out of the skin from the root. This damages the follicle and can change the direction of the new hair’s growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

New hairs also lack that sharp tip to pierce through the skin surface and therefore remain trapped under the skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
