Hi winter, Bye dry skin! Extra smooth DIY body butter recipe
Where in past winters you may have just accepted your dry skin, this time you’re determined to do things differently.
The temperature drops, and so does the oil content in your skin.
While we can protect our lips with a thick layer of lip balm, we often leave our skin “out in the cold.”
There are plenty of ready-made body lotions available, but not all of them give your skin what it truly craves: moisture and nourishment.
A wonderfully scented and highly nourishing body butter can be easily made at home.
Perfect for that rainy Sunday afternoon when it’s too cold to go outside, and you want to pamper yourself.

What you’ll need:
- 1/2 cup shea butter
- 1/2 cup cocoa butter
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- 2 tablespoons calendula oil
- 2 tablespoons vitamin E oil
- A few drops (to your preference) of lavender essential oil
- A glass jar with a lid to store your body butter
- A glass bowl and a larger saucepan
- A spatula and immersion blender
How to make it:
- Place the coconut oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter in the glass bowl. Melt them together, using a double boiler method (au bain marie), until everything is fully melted.
- Turn off the heat and let the mixture cool down. Be sure not to let it harden completely.
- Add the remaining oils. Then use the immersion blender to mix everything into a light and smooth consistency for about 5 to 7 minutes.
- Use the spatula to transfer the mixture into the jar. Store your homemade, natural, and extra smooth body butter in a cool place.
Preferably, use a wooden spatula to scoop out the body butter, as this will help preserve it for as long as possible.
Since your body butter doesn’t contain preservatives like store-bought lotions, bacteria can spoil it more easily.
Your body butter will last 4 to 5 weeks.
All the ingredients can be found in quality health stores, like De Tuinen (now known as Holland & Barrett). They have stores in most major cities, and you can also shop online for a wide range of essential oils and butters for body care.

Shea butter is easily absorbed by the skin, helps reduce redness, and softens the skin.
Cocoa butter deeply hydrates the skin, keeping it soft and supple. It is a relatively thick substance, making it ideal for treating extra dry skin during the winter.
Cocoa butter is also rich in natural antioxidants, which help repair dry or damaged skin.
Coconut oil hydrates the skin, reduces redness, and has antibacterial properties. The saturated fats help the skin stay extra hydrated and give it an even appearance.
Calendula oil contains components that soothe red, swollen, and itchy skin. It helps reduce dry skin and combat eczema and dermatitis.
It also promotes collagen production, aiding in skin repair.
Vitamin E oil boosts the production of new skin cells. It helps soften scars and prevents—and repairs—damage caused by free radicals.

Lavender Oil: Helps reduce dark spots and scars, soothes itchy skin, stimulates the production of healthy skin cells, and combats wrinkles, acne, psoriasis, and eczema.
