Heat bumps: what to do for itching and red rashes caused by heat?

What are heat bumps?

The term “miliaria” is used in the medical world, but popularly known as heat bumps, sweat bumps, heat rash or heat allergy. Heat bumps usually occur where two skin surfaces touch and come into friction with each other, such as the armpits, hollows of the knees or the inside of the thighs. Here the skin cannot breathe as well.

Do you suffer from itching and red bumps after shaving or hair removal? Then you are probably not suffering from heat bumps, but from shaving rash. Read here 5 tips against red bumps after hair removal.

How do heat bumps occur?

Wines on the terrace, reading a book in the garden or enjoying the water. The rising temperatures give us plenty of things we love. Unfortunately, our bodies are not always happy with these higher temperatures and heat bumps appear on our skin.

The bumps occur because sweat glands become clogged and sweat cannot exit through the pores. This causes inflammation in the form of small, red bumps or vesicles filled with fluid. Fortunately, this “heat rash” is harmless and easily treatable and preventable. It is not always known why sweat glands become clogged, but there are a number of factors that play an important role in the development of heat bumps:

☀️ Through warm and tropical weather

Especially in tropical areas, hot and humid, you are more likely to suffer from heat bumps. But during a hot summer in the Netherlands, you can also get the rash, as simply excessive sweating can be a cause.

☀️ During or after physical exertion

Intense running or hard work, any body activity that causes you to sweat profusely can lead to getting a heat rash.

☀️ Due to overheating

Heat bumps can also show up when you overheat yourself, such as by dressing too warmly, sleeping under an electric blanket or too high a temperature in the bedroom.

☀️ During prolonged periods of bed rest

When you lie in bed for a long time, such as when you are sick or recovering from an accident, you may develop sweat bumps, especially if you have a fever.

Heat bumps in babies

The reason babies often get heat rashes has to do with their sweat glands, which are not yet fully developed. This allows sweat to clog more easily. This, often combined with a too warm bedroom or too many clothes, can then quickly cause heat bumps.

Preventing heat bumps

Prevention is always better than cure. When the temperatures at home soar to a maximum, you’re sweating excessively, or you may have a great vacation to a tropical resort in the offing: the following tips can help you avoid heat rash.

I’ll give you 4 tips.

  1. Wear loose-fitting clothing, preferably made of natural materials such as cotton (fabrics such as nylon and polyester are best avoided). This is the very best way to prevent heat bumps, because heat bumps are more likely to occur where there is friction of your skin on (too tight) clothing. The skin cannot breathe well here, causing sweat to be retained.
  2. If you find yourself in hot and humid weather, you do well to avoid activities that involve excessive sweating as much as possible. In addition, cool your body regularly with cold showers and try to seek out cool spaces whenever possible.
  3. Make sure there is plenty of fresh air in the bedroom and constant ventilation. It may not be for everyone, but sleeping naked is the very best way to let your skin breathe properly!
  4. Body areas where you sweat excessively can be additionally absorbed with natural powders, such as bentonite clay or arrowroot. These have a moisture absorbing effect. In an emergency, you can also use talcum powder or even a little dry shampoo.

Heat bumps cure

Are you unfortunately already dealing with already emerging heat bumps? Don’t panic! Heat sores are not serious in most cases and disappear on their own, but they are uncomfortable and it is understandable that you would rather not walk around with them longer than necessary.

Fortunately, there are several things you can apply to get rid of rashes faster.

☀️ As for prevention, the most important thing for healing heat bumps is to allow the affected skin to breathe properly and therefore wear loose clothing.

☀️ Also, especially try not to touch the rash as you can get additional inflammation and thus cause even more problems for your skin. To make sure the blisters and bumps don’t open up, I recommend dabbing your body dry after showering instead of rubbing.

☀️ You do well to avoid humid and hot places for a while, such as swimming pools and saunas.

☀️ Although that delicious piña colada-scented body lotion or shower gel is obviously perfect for summer, it’s better to opt for natural products for a while. Indeed, highly scented beauty products can cause additional irritation to the skin. So for now, choose only natural products without perfume.

#beautyhack: Aloe vera works to cool heat bumps. Do you have an aloe vera plant at home? Cut off a stem, remove the inner “gel” and place it in the refrigerator for a while for extra cooling and then smear it on your skin. Delicious!

Enjoy your summer!

After following the above tips against heat bumps, you can enjoy the nice weather this summer! Viva la summer!

Make sure you are well protected from the sun, though. Always apply sunscreen and cover your skin with breathable clothing and wear a bright hat or cap.

Do you use our YIONN Raka lotion against red shaving rash, among other things? Then pay extra attention to proper sun protection. Your new skin is extra sensitive to the sun and sunburn. Apply with an appropriate factor (SPF) and repeat throughout the day. Especially when you go swimming.
