Everything you want (and need) to know about depilatory cream!
There are so many different ways to remove unwanted hair these days that you can hardly see the hairy forest for the trees. Each option brings its own advantages and disadvantages.

How does a depilatory cream work?
Depilatory creams contain certain alkaline chemicals that break down the protein structure (keratin) of your hairs at the hair follicle.
This causes them to soften and dissolve in a few minutes. All that’s left for you to do is wipe the hair with a spatula.
Tip! Always test a depilatory cream on a small patch of skin first! Does it burn or itch? Then rinse the cream off immediately and look for another hair removal method that suits you better.
Are there any natural options?
Anyone who has used a depilatory cream before knows that they often have an unpleasant chemical smell. This is because many creams contain a laundry list of (chemical) ingredients that can be very harmful to sensitive skin.
Fortunately, more and more brands are working with natural ingredients that do smell good. Also, many creams are enriched with vitamins that nourish and moisturize the skin. And furthermore, natural hair removal powder is also a good idea!
Note! Always read the ingredient list carefully! Because a nice scent does not immediately mean it does not contain chemical junk. Indeed, sometimes the unpleasant odor is simply camouflaged.
Can I use a depilatory cream anywhere?
By itself, you can use a depilatory cream on any part of the body. Just make sure you always use the right cream. For example, the skin of your pubic area is more sensitive than the skin on the rest of your body. Then again, your face is more sensitive than your pubic area. So pay close attention!
Tip: A depilatory cream may be appropriate for your pubic area, but don’t use it on your genitals! This stuff is too aggressive for that. It’s also better not to cover birthmarks, cuts, pimples, scars and damaged or sunburned skin with depilatory cream!
Can I use a depilatory cream even during the summer?
Doesn’t your skin get irritated by using a depilatory cream? Then you can continue to use it with confidence during the summer months. Always make sure not to expose your skin to the sun shortly after hair removal as this can cause pigmentation.
Tip! Slaved hard for that nice tan? Then maybe skip the depilatory cream because it removes hair as well as superficial (tanned) skin cells. A shame, of course!

With a depilatory cream, all spots on your body are easy to reach. Especially for women with “deep” armpits, this is a convenient solution.
Painless
Compared to epilation and waxing, hair removal cream is generally painless. However, always test the cream on a small piece of skin first, do not use it on wounds and never exceed the recommended time!
Cheap
Depending on how much cream you use and exactly what you want to depilate, a depilatory cream is relatively inexpensive. Are you starting to smear thick layers all over your body? Then, of course, the costs add up quickly.
Disadvantages of depilatory cream
Irritated skin
The chemicals make you more likely to experience irritation and burning.
Not for everyone
People with damaged skin (wounds, acne, etc.) unfortunately cannot use depilatory creams. Again, because of the chemicals.
What is that smell?
Many creams have a somewhat unpleasant smell. (Yes, that’s still nicely worded.) Fortunately, more and more brands are working with natural ingredients that do smell good. Or at least less chemical.
Pretty(/hairless) songs don’t last long
Because you do not remove the entire hair root, you quickly regain stubble (but it is much less rigid than shaving).

- Have a low pain threshold and therefore cannot epilate or wax
- Do not have an overly sensitive skin
- Not wanting to overspend
- Have sufficient time to work on a weekly basis
Do you have sensitive skin that discolors easily? Then shaving is a better option.
